About
With professional experience in excess of 40 years that has centered upon first- and third-party
coverage analysis, defending insurance carriers and their insureds in all aspects of first-party bad
faith litigation and third-party liability matters, Rob Nelms also has extensive knowledge in a
wide variety of insurance-related coverage matters including assisting carriers in drafting policy
language, prosecuting Declaratory Relief Actions, Arbitrations and Appraisals. During his
career, Mr. Nelms has tried over twenty-six jury trials to verdict in state and U.S. Federal District
Courts throughout California.
Mr. Nelms has significant experience in the handling of suspect claims arising from both first-
party and third-party matters and has arbitrated numerous such cases. He has also handled
catastrophic injury claims, premises liability, professional liability as well as litigation regarding
concurrent causation earth movement claims, landslides and loss of lateral and subjacent support.
Mr. Nelms’ practice has also included the preparation of appellate briefs and the presentation of
oral arguments before the California courts of appeal, including several reported decisions. He
has been designated as an expert witness on various coverage issues and has testified in
deposition and at trial.
Mr. Nelms graduated from the University of Virginia (Bachelor of Arts, 1980) and the
Pepperdine University School of Law (Juris Doctor, 1984). He is admitted to practice before all
the courts of the State of California, the Central and Southern U.S. District Courts of California, and
the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit. Additionally, he is admitted to the practice of law in his home state of Virginia, the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court.
Outside of his legal practice he enjoys motorcycling, hiking, music, travel and wine tasting.
